We went to
Birches Restaurant in the Canton neighborhood of Baltimore for dinner one night. The cuisine is basically upscale comfort food. In fact, every year, they have a competition for best comfort food dish which they then add to the menu.
My favorite dish was the Baby Spinach Salad because it included avocado, grilled Halloumi cheese, and chile oil popped corn. I probably could have just eaten this.
My friend Lamphole got the Camponata Brushetta with eggplant and also grilled Halloumi cheese.
One of Birches' specialties is their Macaroni & Cheese. The use Grafton Vermont Cheddar cheese and then add Panko bread crumbs. The result is a creamy version of the dish.
This is the Ashley after Sam which consisted of grilled shrimp with jalapeno grits and black beans.
Lamphole got the Shrimp and Scallop Risotto.
I got the Birches Steak Pizzialo which is a flank steak with tomato sauce, mozzarella & parmesan.

I just ate there. I was yelled at by the owner and called an asshole We tried to split the check with 3 credit cards and a gift certificate. None of us happen to have cash and tried to use our credit cards. We were told you couldn't use that many credit cards and it was in the menu. We said we hadn't seen that in the menu and were told that we are assholes. Seriously, he called us all assholes after we said nothing. He actually came back in the restaurant to tells us that after he had left. We have all eaten there a ton of times and have had parties there. I do not know what the problem was, but I used to love Birches and recommend it. I will never eat there again and will let everyone I know what happened.
I read another bad review on dining@large.com while searching for a location to host a birthday party. If you go to this blog, posted by The Baltimore Sun, you can actually read a letter from the owner... he seems like a nut job! We will certainly not be booking at Birches.
